I went to the TKE studios in Margate, and saw Vincent Hawkins exhibition there; ‘A Line of Ashes’

I felt like I had not exclusively painted for a while, so seeing this exhibtion opened my eyes to the oppourtunity to be playful with something ‘two dimensional’ as you can create real texture. Vincent used thick oils to bring his work out from the canvas- which gave me permission to use my fabric and latex scraps. Some of Vincent’s work was presented on wooden panels- which blended into the archiecture of the building it was presented in. Thinking about the ‘domestic’ and stuctures associated with it, I sourced a wooden panel that was going to be made into shutters. That seemed important to me- a peice of architecture that’s sole purpose is to provide boundary, to shut out the world.
