Artifact 16: Counter Site

Second-hand wooden mirror, latex, green spray acrylic through lace fabric insert, wooden carved mouse, 11.69 x 16.54 inches

I created this work after researching for my dissertation Michel Foucault’s ‘Heterotopic Spaces’ in particular, the other space of a mirror- a counter site that reflects, inverts and contradicts the ‘actual’ space surroudning it. A mirror is the quintessential heteroptopia, it makes one’s location ‘real’ by making a ‘virtual’ space that makes you feel present when you are actually absent. It is the ‘placeless place’. I thought about how I can physically represent this theory, but with an Unnamed entity seeping through... disrupting the boundary between absent and present. I decided latex was going to be important- do represent an ‘after’ the residue left behind- and the mould flowers of course.
This is a key ideology which I focused on elucidating in the ‘Kitscape’ (Interim Show), the ‘presence’ of something/someone that disintegrates time, place and being.
